Thatched farmhouses buried in snow, their windows glowing gold against a dark blue sky: the winter light-up at Shirakawa-go (白川郷) is one of the most photographed scenes in Japan. It only happens on a few evenings each January, and it is no longer possible to simply turn up.
For 2027, the light-up runs on four evenings in January, and entry is by advance reservation only. This guide explains the dates, the five ways to secure entry announced by the Shirakawa-go Tourist Association, and how to plan your visit.
1. What Is Shirakawa-go?
Shirakawa-go is a village in the mountains of Gifu Prefecture, famous for its gassho-zukuri (合掌造り) farmhouses. The name means "hands joined in prayer", describing the steep thatched roofs, which are built to shed the heavy snow of the region. Together with the Gokayama villages in neighbouring Toyama, the Ogimachi district of Shirakawa-go was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.
People still live in many of the houses. That is important to remember: the light-up takes place in a residential village, which is one reason the rules are strict.
2. Light-Up Dates for 2027
The 41st Shirakawa-go Light-Up will be held in the Ogimachi district on these dates, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.:
5:30–7:30 p.m. Coming of Age Day (public holiday)
5:30–7:30 p.m.
5:30–7:30 p.m.
5:30–7:30 p.m.
The event is fully reservation-based. Tickets are not sold on the day, and people without one cannot enter the village during the light-up. From 3:30 p.m. on event days, a gate operates at the village entrance. The organisers also say the event may be cancelled if a severe cold wave causes major traffic disruption.
3. The Five Ways to Attend
The Tourist Association lists five ways to take part. Your entry ticket is a holder you wear around your neck, in a colour that is only valid on that day.
| Option | Details | Observation deck? |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Stay overnight in the village | Chosen by lottery. Applications ran from October 1 to October 31, 2026, by email; results on November 10, 2026. | Yes |
| 2. Private car with reserved parking | Online, first come, first served. First sale (September 10) is sold out. Second sale: December 1, 2026, 1:00 p.m. JST, 7,000 yen for 1–5 people or 10,000 yen for 6–10 people per car. | No |

| 5. Travel agency bus tours | Details to be linked on the Tourist Association site from December 2, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. | No |
Bus tour sale dates (all at 2:00 p.m. JST)
- January 11 tours: on sale from October 13, 2026
- January 17 tours: from October 19, 2026
- January 24 tours: from October 26, 2026

Most bus operators sell online only. Book directly with the operator, and check whether your plan includes an observation deck ticket.
4. Example: Bus Tours from Takayama
For many international visitors, the most practical option is a bus tour from Takayama. Nohi Bus runs three plans from the Takayama Nohi Bus Center on all four dates:
| Plan | Price | Includes |
|---|---|---|
| A | 13,000 yen | Return bus, admission to the Gassho-zukuri Minkaen open-air museum with zenzai (sweet bean soup) |
| B | 16,000 yen | Return bus, observation deck ticket and a local product |
| C | 14,000 yen | Return bus, a ticket for the Shirasuno-yu hot spring (for use on a later date) and a local product |
Payment is by credit card at booking, with up to six people per application. Changes are not allowed after payment. Remember to exchange your booking at the bus centre counter before boarding.
5. The Observation Deck
The classic view of the whole village glowing in the snow is taken from the Ogimachi Castle Ruins Observation Deck (荻町城跡展望台). During the light-up:
- Only people with an observation deck ticket can go up. Tickets are not sold separately. They come only with an overnight stay plan or a bus tour that includes one.
- Viewing is in three rotating time slots, and you cannot choose your slot.
- Tripods are not allowed on the deck, and pets cannot go up.
- Cars cannot drive to the deck on event days. Use the shuttle or the walking path, which takes about 15 to 20 minutes on foot.
6. Rules You Must Follow
The area is residential, and flying drones is prohibited. Violations may be penalised.
Cars must have studless winter tyres. No stopping or dropping off outside designated parking.
Stay on public paths and do not enter private houses or gardens. The organisers say rule-breakers may be banned from future events.
7. What to Wear and Bring
The organisers expect temperatures of about -10°C to 0°C during the event, with icy roads. They recommend:
- Warm, waterproof outerwear and waterproof insulated boots
- Anti-slip spikes for your shoes
- A torch, since the village is very dark away from the lights
- Hand warmers, a hat and gloves for standing still outside
See our winter clothing guide for more advice.
8. Visiting Shirakawa-go in Winter Without the Light-Up
If you cannot get a light-up ticket, the village is still beautiful by day in January and February. On event days, daytime visitors by car can park without reservation from 8:00 a.m., with last entry at 3:00 p.m. and all cars out by 5:00 p.m., and the Tourist Association recommends arriving by noon. On other days, highway buses run from Takayama and Kanazawa. These often need reservations in winter, so check the bus companies' official sites. Combine it with Takayama's old town or Kanazawa for a two- or three-day trip.

Conclusion
The Shirakawa-go Light-Up is magical, but it takes planning. Choose your date, book a bus tour as soon as sales open (or a parking slot on December 1), dress for -10°C and follow the village's rules. If tickets sell out, a daytime visit in the snow is still unforgettable. For more winter ideas, see the snow monkeys of Jigokudani, Sapporo Snow Festival 2027 and Japan in January.
