Shinkansen Luggage Rules 2026: Oversized Baggage & Reservations

Japan's bullet trains are fast, punctual and comfortable, but they were not designed for travellers with two giant suitcases each. On the busiest Shinkansen lines there is a clear rule for large luggage, and if you ignore it, you can be charged an extra fee on board. The good news is that the rule is simple once you know how to measure your bag.

This guide explains the Shinkansen luggage rules for 2026: the size limits, which lines require a reservation, how to book a seat with an oversized baggage area, and what to do if your bag is too big.

1. Measure Your Bag: The 160 cm and 250 cm Rule

Japan Railways measures luggage by adding together its length + width + height, including wheels and handles. This total decides which rule applies.

Total size (L + W + H)What you need to do
160 cm or lessNothing. Bring it on board and put it on the overhead rack, at your feet, or in a luggage area if there is space.
161 cm to 250 cmOn the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen, you must reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area.
Over 250 cmNot allowed on the train at all. Send it by courier instead.

To put that into perspective, a typical airline cabin bag is around 115 cm in total. A medium checked suitcase is usually under 160 cm. It is the large checked suitcases, often marketed as 28 to 32 inch, that tend to go over 160 cm.

How much can you bring? JR Central allows up to two pieces of luggage per person free of charge, each no heavier than 30 kg, no longer than 2 m and no more than 250 cm in total. Umbrellas, handbags and walking sticks do not count.

2. Which Shinkansen Lines Need a Reservation?

The reservation rule applies only to these lines, which together run from Tokyo to Kagoshima:

πŸš„ Tokaido Shinkansen

Tokyo – Nagoya – Kyoto – Shin-Osaka. The route most visitors use.

πŸš„ Sanyo Shinkansen

Shin-Osaka – Okayama – Hiroshima – Hakata.

πŸš„ Kyushu & Nishi-Kyushu

Hakata – Kumamoto – Kagoshima-Chuo, and Takeo-Onsen – Nagasaki.

Shinkansen lines run by JR East, including the Tohoku, Joetsu, Hokuriku, Yamagata and Akita lines, as well as the Hokkaido Shinkansen, are not part of this reservation system. Large bags can be taken on board without a reservation, although space is limited, so check the latest rules with the rail company before you travel. Ordinary conventional trains do not require a reservation for large luggage either.

3. How to Reserve a Seat with an Oversized Baggage Area

The seat with an oversized baggage area (η‰Ήε€§θ·η‰©γ‚ΉγƒšγƒΌγ‚Ήγ€γεΊ§εΈ) is the last row of seats in certain reserved cars. Behind it is a space where you can put a large suitcase. The ticket costs the same as an ordinary reserved seat. There is no extra charge.

  • At a ticket office or reserved-seat ticket machine: Choose "Seat with an oversized baggage area" when selecting your seat, or tell the staff you have a large bag.
  • Online: Smart EX and the JR-West and JR Kyushu online booking services all let you choose this seat type.
  • With a Japan Rail Pass: Reserve the seat at a JR ticket office or through the JAPAN RAIL PASS reservation website.

Reservations open one month before the travel date. These seats are limited, so book early, especially for travel around New Year, Golden Week and the summer Obon holiday.

Non-reserved cars: Seats with an oversized baggage area exist only in reserved cars of Nozomi, Hikari and Kodama trains. If you plan to ride in a non-reserved car with a large bag, you will not be able to use this space. See our Shinkansen guide for the difference between reserved and non-reserved seats.

4. What Happens If You Do Not Reserve?

If you board a Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu or Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen with a bag between 161 and 250 cm and you do not have a seat with an oversized baggage area, the conductor will charge you a baggage fee of 1,000 yen (tax included). You may also be told where to put the bag, which might not be next to you.

⚠️ Do not block the aisle or doors

Leaving a large suitcase in the aisle or in front of the doors is unsafe and annoys other passengers. If your bag does not fit in the rack or at your feet, it needs a proper space: either a reserved oversized baggage seat or a luggage area.

5. The Oversized Baggage Compartments

On the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen, some decks between carriages have an oversized baggage compartment (η‰Ήε€§θ·η‰©γ‚³γƒΌγƒŠγƒΌ). Since July 1, 2025, JR Central and JR West have been running a trial in which these compartments can be used without a reservation. The trial has no announced end date, and space is first come, first served, so you cannot count on finding a free spot on a busy train.

Strollers, musical instruments and sports equipment are not covered by the oversized baggage rule, so they can be brought on board without a reservation. However, if you want to use the space behind the last row of seats for them, you still need to reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area.

6. Easier Alternatives: Travel Light

Many travellers find that the simplest solution is not to carry their big suitcase on the train at all.

πŸ“¦ Luggage forwarding

Send your suitcase from your hotel to your next hotel, usually arriving the next day. This is the most popular choice. See our luggage forwarding guide.

πŸ” Coin lockers

Leave your bag at the station for a day trip. Large lockers fill up early. See our coin locker guide.

🧳 JR luggage services

JR Central offers a paid hands-free delivery service for items up to 200 cm, which must be booked in advance.

7. A Quick Checklist Before You Ride

  • Measure your bag: length + width + height, wheels included.
  • Under 160 cm? No action needed.
  • 161 to 250 cm on the Tokaido, Sanyo or Kyushu lines? Reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area.
  • Over 250 cm? Send it by courier.
  • Travelling at peak times? Book as soon as reservations open, one month ahead.
  • Moving between several cities? Consider forwarding your suitcase and travelling with a day bag.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a seat with an oversized baggage area cost extra?

No. It is the same price as any other reserved seat in the same class.

Can I reserve the seat with my Japan Rail Pass?

Yes. Japan Rail Pass holders can reserve it at a JR ticket office or through the JAPAN RAIL PASS reservation website. See our JR Pass guide.

Do these rules apply on the Tokyo to Kanazawa route?

No. The Hokuriku Shinkansen does not sell seats with an oversized baggage area, so no reservation is required. Space for large bags is still limited, so travel light if you can.

What counts as a large bag?

Any single item whose length, width and height add up to more than 160 cm. Two medium bags under 160 cm each do not need a reservation.

Conclusion

The Shinkansen luggage rule comes down to one number: 160 cm. Below it, just get on. Between 161 and 250 cm on the lines from Tokyo to Kyushu, reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area at no extra cost, or pay 1,000 yen on board. Above 250 cm, use a courier. Better still, send your suitcase ahead and enjoy the ride with a light bag. Planning a winter trip? Read Japan New Year holidays, when Nozomi trains are reserved seats only.
